I didn't want to react to the big Mavs-Wizards trade until I saw some results. First, the primary departed players, both of whom I liked. Josh Howard had proved to be a starter but not a finisher. Usually good for an early scoring punch in a game but invisible at the end. It was time. I've always liked Drew Gooden but his foul trouble and inconsistent play was a problem..
Right away, everyone said Caron Butler was the big get and he is an upgrade from Howard. In the wins over LA and Atlanta Butler was out sick. These games showed the real value of the trade was Brendan Haywood. The Mavs have never had a 5 play this consistently. Desean Stephenson has shown his value as a defender and spot shooter.
Earlier I said the Mavericks were the deepest team in the league. The well just got deeper.
